More importantly, sodium resources are extremely abundant, hundreds of times more abundant than lithium resources. Therefore, once the supporting facilities of the sodium battery industry are improved, the cost of batteries will be greatly reduced, and its broad prospects have attracted many players to invest in this new track.

Q: What are the differences in working principles and characteristics between sodium batteries and lithium batteries? Do energy storage devices such as PCS and BMS that match it need to be customized based on the characteristics of sodium ion batteries?

Answer: The main difference between sodium and lithium batteries is the voltage. The working voltage range of lithium iron phosphate batteries is 2.7~3.6V, while the working voltage range of sodium batteries is 1.5~3.95V, with a larger difference after grouping. Taking PCS as an example, the current common lithium battery system voltage is 1123.2-1497.6V, and the corresponding PCS voltage is 1000-1500V. The voltage of the sodium ion battery system is 600-1500V. If the original PCS (1000-1500V) is used, the sodium battery can only release about 60% of its power, and the remaining power cannot be fully discharged. Therefore, it is necessary to customize and develop PCS that match sodium batteries.

Product 1: Series PCS with a rated power of 145kW


This product adopts a modular design, which can accurately manage battery clusters, and single cluster battery maintenance does not affect the overall operation of the station; In terms of topology, using three-level technology, the highest efficiency can reach 99%; Simultaneously equipped with IP66 protection level, supporting outdoor installation and flexible layout. We can provide a series type boost converter integrated machine, supporting multi branch parallel connection and convenient expansion.

Product 2: Centralized PCS with a rated power of 1600kW

This product can reach a high power of 1600kW per unit and is compatible with high-capacity battery system units; In terms of heat dissipation, intelligent two-phase flow heat exchange technology is adopted, with a 50 ℃ ambient temperature that does not decrease, fearless of sand and waste; And it supports IP66 protection for the entire machine, with optional C5 anti-corrosion, which can perfectly adapt to various project scenarios. Simultaneously supporting the integrated design of boost and converter, perfectly matching the 3.2MWh system.


Product 3: Centralized PCS with a rated power of 2000kW

This product can accommodate 2 2MWh battery compartments, with a small footprint and high power density; Adopting intelligent two-phase flow heat exchange technology, supporting special scenario applications at 50 ℃; The whole machine adopts IP66 protection level, with C5 anti-corrosion optional, not afraid of wind and sand, and not afraid of extreme heat; Supports multiple working modes including PQ, VF, and VSG, and has the ability to form a network. Can be integrated with a step-up and converter integrated machine, suitable for voltage levels of 35kV and below.



Recently, we have assisted the smooth operation of the 1MW/1MWh sodium ion battery energy storage power station in Dagang Oilfield, Tianjin, achieving grid connection and power transmission. This project adopts a new technology of sodium ion batteries, which is an active exploration of the application of sodium ion batteries in energy storage power stations. It provides important technical support for the large-scale application of sodium ion battery energy storage and promotes the energy storage industry to further move towards the era of sodium ion batteries.



The power station adopts a prefabricated outdoor layout, consisting of one battery compartment and one booster integrated compartment. The project selects sodium iron phosphate batteries as energy storage battery packs, equipped with PCS boost integrated compartments. The working voltage range on the DC side of the booster integrated cabin is 698-1500V, which perfectly matches the sodium battery system in the project. During operation, the power station charges and discharges according to the voltage range, and has accumulated over 180 charges and discharges in less than a month. The overall operation is stable, setting a benchmark for the industry.

New technologies are driving energy transformation, and the potential of sodium batteries in high and low temperature performance, deep charging and discharging, and long cycle life indicates that their application prospects in the field of energy storage will be even broader.
